Erdogan's anti-Western backlash strains ties with EU, US

US Defence Secretary Ash Carter has reiterated his country's strong commitment to Turkey in the aftermath of a failed coup which has raised question marks about the bonds between the two nations. “Turkey has been a strong ally for decades,” Carter said, “and the relationship remains very strong”. But with a third of Turkey's armed forces' top brass under arrest and the purge of judges, lecturers and civil servants reaching 60,000, nobody in Washington or Europe's capitals believes Turkey's relations with its allies can remain unaltered. The anti-Western backlash in Turkey is in full swing, and appears to be led by President Recep Erdogan. Both the US and European governments are desperate to avoid criticising Turkey. But patience with the Turks is wearing thin.
